Early Spring in the Tetons

Spring time in Grand Teton National Park

Spring skiing in Jackson usually starts near the end of March or at the beginning of April but as we all know Mother Nature has her own plans. After a long cold winter everyone is embracing these warm spring days. No more waking up early for first tracks but slow mornings waiting for the snow to warm up. Sounds a little crazy saying you are waiting for the snow to warm up but during this time of year there is a freeze thaw cycle. The snow warms up in the afternoon from the sun and air temperature into what people call “corn” snow and then temperatures start to drop in the evenings and overnight causing it to re-freeze.

During this time of year all winter activities such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and backcountry skiing are still possible and very popular here in Jackson. No matter what time of year it is important to layer to make sure you don’t overheat while out playing! Jackson sits at 6,000 ft and the sun is very strong so sunscreen is highly recommended. Cross-country equipment stays the same no matter what conditions are out but snowshoeing during the spring may be dependent on where you are going. There is a chance that where you would usually wear snowshoes, micro-spikes would actually be the better option.

Backcountry touring equipment during the spring for both skiers and boarders will look a little different. Skiers are going to want to pick alpine touring skis that are stiffer that will provide better stability and with moderate camber and rocker for edge grip on icy slopes. For split-boards in the backcountry you want something stiff with a camber to help handle varying conditions from icy morning skin tracks to afternoon slush. A tapered shape with a slightly wider nose to help with flotation and a stiffer tail to provide edge control on icy slopes, such as the Jones Solution.

New avalanche risks come with spring conditions in the backcountry. Just because snow fall decreases in the spring does not mean that avalanche risk has. If you are planning on entering avalanche terrain it is still important to have the proper safety equipment. Daytime heating can cause wet, loose avalanches to happen. You should check out jhavalanche.org to see the latest conditions of where you are going. It should also be noted that with spring time snow adventures you should be cautious of thinner snowpack and variable conditions that may exist.

Some popular spring backcountry skiing spots include Teton Pass area and in Grand Teton National Park. Both these places offer a wide array of terrain for all skill levels and beautiful views. On Teton Pass fun ones to do are Glory Bowl, Mt. Taylor and Edelweiss are just some to note. In Grand Teton National Park 25 Short, Mavericks and Wimpys are some great ones if you are wanting to get into the national park.
